Electricity, which is one of the main forms of energy used in buildings, is generated using fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. These fossil fuels are non-renewable and during combustion emit carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming and climate change. This coupled with the rate at which fossil fuel is depleting explains the global drive to look to alternative sources such as bio-diesel and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

Energy in the form of electricity, oil and gas is used in buildings for operating systems such as air-conditioning, heating, lighting, lifts & escalators, which are essential for the safety and comfort of its occupants. These building systems alone account for about 70% to 80% of the total energy consumed in the buildings generally. With oil prices soaring, building owners and operators turn to energy management to trim their operating costs.

In Buildings, energy cost savings of between 5% to 15% are usually obtained quickly by optimizing its current operating strategies with minimal requirement in capital expenditure. Savings of up to 50% are achievable for older buildings yet comply with the codes when an aggressive energy management program involving some form of plant and equipment retrofit is embarked on.

In consequence, the potential for the energy efficient strategies with sustainable technologies to promote High Performance Green Buildings are immense; given the high demand for such services both locally and internationally.
